Description
The Marketing Director is a senior leadership position reporting to the Executive Director, responsible for leading the Center's marketing, branding, and communications strategy. This role ensures all outreach and promotion efforts reflect and reinforce the mission, values, and the organization’s strategic goals.
The Marketing Director shapes the Jansen Art Center's public presence across platforms, leads strategic communications planning, and collaborates with staff, artists, instructors, and community partners to maximize visibility, participation, and public engagement. This role also manages the marketing budget and serves as a key contributor to organizational planning, institutional storytelling, and fundraising communications. The Marketing Director may supervise staff.
Responsibilities
The Marketing Director is responsible for shaping and executing an organization-wide marketing strategy that advances the Jansen Art Center’s mission, increases public engagement, and supports long-term sustainability. This leadership role drives storytelling, brand identity, and strategic communications across platforms, while managing resources and guiding collaborative efforts across departments. Key responsibilities include:
- Prepare and oversee the annual marketing budget.
- Develop and implement a comprehensive marketing strategy and annual plan that promotes The J and its individual programs, studios, and events.
- Evaluate the effectiveness of campaigns and adjust strategies based on data, insights, and goals.
- Maintain and evolve The J’s visual identity, voice, and messaging consistency across platforms.
- Create or oversee the development of compelling content for print, digital, email, web, and social media.
- Generate a public-facing annual report in collaboration with the Executive Director and Development staff.
- Recruit, manage and maintain a network of freelance designers and content creators to augment marketing capacity.
- Prepare quarterly (Q1–Q3) and year-end summary Marketing reports.
- Contribute to marketing-related grant development and reporting in partnership with the Executive Director and Philanthropy team.

Qualifications & Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in marketing, communications, or a related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- 3+ years of progressively responsible experience in nonprofit, arts, education, or missiondriven marketing.
- Demonstrated ability to manage projects, meet deadlines, and collaborate across teams.
- Strong verbal, writing, editing, and visual communication skills.
- Familiarity with digital marketing tools such as email platforms, CMS, SEO, Google Analytics, and social media management.
- Experience supervising staff, interns, or contractors.
- Comfort working with external vendors and creatives such as designers or photographers.
- Enthusiasm for the arts and belief in the power of creative expression to build community.
Working Conditions
This is an onsite leadership role based at the Jansen Art Center in Lynden, WA. The position requires working primarily in an office setting with frequent interaction with staff, artists, and the public. Some evening and weekend work is required in conjunction with events, performances, or promotional campaigns.
