Seattle Aquarium
Company Overview
The Seattle Aquarium occupies a unique position in the Puget Sound region. We are, on the one hand, a well-known cultural Institution where people of all ages and walks of life come to experience the wonder and beauty of the marine environment. On the other hand, we are also the largest marine education platform in Washington State, offering a broad range of learning opportunities both in and outside the Aquarium walls. With more than 800,000 visitors every year, plus thousands of others who benefit from our outreach programs across the region, we are in an ideal position to engage everyone in the preservation of our environment. Our mission is Inspiring Conservation of Our Marine Environment, and we accomplish this with a staff of 97, the dedicated support of more than 900 volunteers yearly, plus the strategic guidance of 46 board members.
Company History
The Seattle Aquarium was built with $5.4 million in King County Forward Thrust Bonds. It opened in 1977 as a city owned and managed facility under the Parks & Recreation division. In 2010 the nonprofit Seattle Aquarium Society assumed the management of the Aquarium. Over 26 million people have visited the Aquarium since it opened.
In 2007 a $41million expasion was completed bringing the front door of the Aquarium out to Alaskan Way and adding Puget Sound Great Hall, Window on Washington Waters exhibit, and the Crashing Waves exhibit.
Ove the next 6-8 years the Seattle waterfront will go through a major transformation as the seawall is replaced, the viaduct is demolished and a park is built. During this period the Aquarium will have a capital campaign for major improvements.
