Seattle Children's Museum

Company Overview

Seattle Children’s Museum (SCM) began as a single exhibit in 1979 and has grown into a 22,000 square-foot facility that serves nearly 200,000 visitors annually, including hundreds of school groups that use the Museum as an educational resource.

We are located in the cultural heart of Seattle, on the Seattle Center campus just steps away from the Space Needle in the lower level of the Armory. Our campus neighbors and partners include: Seattle Monorail, Chihuly Garden and Glass, EMP, Pacific Science Center and Seattle Children's Theatre.

SCM offers 12 exhibits and daily educational activities. Our vision is to connect children to the creativity within themselves. We take our tagline seriously – Where Imagination Comes Alive! – as we let curiosity and imagination lead the way to learning.

Mission Statement
Our mission is to bring to life the joy of discovery for children and their families through fun, creative, hands-on exploration of the world around them. We strive to ignite children's curiosity and encourage them to become active, life-long learners.

Company History

In 2013, we completed the installation of a new kid-sized Sound Transit Station and have completed a first stage of renovations to our Cog City exhibit, which illustrates cause-and-effect and physics in imaginative ways.

We opened a new exhibit, Fort Adventure, where kids and families use motor skills, basic engineering principals, and problem-solving skills to build play structures.

We expanded our outreach to families underserved by educational experiences, by offering an increased number of admissions through Passport 2 Play.

And our Summer Camp program achieved accreditation by the American Camp Association, underscoring its benefits and its professionalism.

Notable Accomplishments / Recognition

Exhibits -- Examples of our exhibit spaces include: Imagination Studio, a hands-on fine art studio for children ages 3 months to 10 years. The Bijou Theatre, which develops children's imagination and acting talents on stage with costumes, sets, props, lights and sound. And Global Village, which brings to life the cultures, music and traditions of Ghana, the Philippines and Japan in child-sized villages modeled on actual communities.

Educational Programming - Admission to SCM gives families access to our exhibits & also our educational & cultural programs. Ongoing math and science-based education programming helps young children and their caregivers explore STEM subjects. Recurring arts performances and demonstrations represent a wide variety of cultures & engage families in traditions they might not otherwise experience through music, dance and theatre. We draw on artists throughout the Pacific Northwest to ensure authentic, entertaining experiences for young children & their families.

Passport 2 Play Programs (P2P) - Through a variety of services, P2P offers opportunities for families in need. Each year we give away over $136,000 in free services such as admission for families & groups, as well as mobile museum moments. P2P is run in partnership with social services organizations in Snohomish, King and Pierce counties which assure P2P benefits families who could not otherwise afford to visit SCM. These families make up over 16 percent of our annual attendance.
